The revelation that Kliff Kingsbury is interviewing for the Bears staff makes Trojans Caleb Williams even more likely.
Caleb Williams, the quarterback for the USC Trojans, had the football world waiting to see if he would enter the draft. On the last day when upperclassmen could file their declarations, the news was finally received.
Williams’ future has been the subject of months’ worth of rumors, many of which incorrectly predicted that the Chicago Bears would select him in the first round. It makes perfect sense that the Bears, who currently hold the first pick in the draft, would select Williams.
Williams is the number one overall pick, and given his skill, a lot of clubs are probably trying to figure out how to move up to get him.
Still, the Bears are in a dangerous position. They have Justin Fields right now, who isn’t the worst quarterback in the league by any means. Fields has occasionally displayed exceptional abilities, but his results have not been what the Bears were probably expecting for.
For many of the other QB-hungry clubs that lack the funds or a high enough choice to acquire one of the other possibilities in the draft, Fields would be a top trade prospect.
The Bears may also go all in by trading Fields for additional draft capital, selecting Williams at the top of the draft, and assembling a team around him that would propel them back into the NFC title. All of this is nothing new, having been reported for months, but this morning the college and NFL worlds got a major update regarding the hiring of Kliff Kingsbury, the current offensive analyst coach and quarterback coach at USC, as the offensive coordinator for the Bears.
Former NFL head coach Kingsbury was employed by the Arizona Cardinals before returning to his alma mater, USC Trojans.
Williams had a tremendous year, almost winning the Heisman Trophy twice, and it was all Williams’ fault, thanks to Kingsbury.
The Bears may reassure the young quarterback by putting him back with a coach he already has faith in, even though they may already have made up their minds to sign Williams.
Considering his prior experience as a head coach, Kingsbury’s return to the NFL makes perfect sense. Why not sign him to help Williams even more in the professional ranks? The Bears are in dire need of new personnel.
The announcement that Kingsbury is conducting interviews for the OC position should eliminate any doubt that the Bears will choose Williams. This would imply that the Bears, who have not yet confirmed the position, would have to make him an offer.
But Williams will be wearing a Bears jersey if it is announced in the upcoming days or weeks that Kingsbury has been hired.
Although the Bears’ decision to cut Fields after three seasons may seem silly to some, it is the reality of the NFL. After one season, the Arizona Cardinals selected Kyler Murray in the draft instead of Josh Rosen.
Murray was a better choice for the Cardinals than Rosen, despite the fact that he has also experienced problems.
Fields is still a potential starting option in the league after the Bears attempted their experiment with him, but it’s time for them to move on. Fields may be used to locate the players and draft cash needed to propel Williams to stardom right away.
