Steelers Get Huge Injuries.

Back in training camp, the Pittsburgh Steelers were without two of their best defensive players.

Pittsburgh Steelers: T.J. Watt (concussion) and Alex Highsmith (concussion) practiced with the team for the first time this week. Head coach Mike Tomlin said both players are day-to-day and could be back by the weekend. It’s unclear how much they practiced outside of their individual sessions, which were reported by All Steelers via video.

Highsmith (knee) and Watt (concussion), the team’s top two pass rushers with 20 sacks each, were listed as out of concussion protocol early in the week. Head coach Mike Tomlin offered no update on their status for Sunday’s game against the Colts at his weekly news conference. “They will be cleared to practice,” Tomlin said, “and they will be cleared to play.”

Last week, Highsmith sustained a neck injury against the Patriots that forced him out for the remainder of the game. On the first play of the game, Watt was hit in the head by a knee from New England’s Ezekiel Elliott and had to leave the game and then return multiple times.

Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin has not confirmed that Watt was evaluated for a concussion in the second half of last week, but the NFL’s concussion observer was seen escorting him to the medical tent.

Both Watt and Highsmith will need to pass concussion protocols before this weekend’s game against the Colts. An independent neurologist will evaluate them before the team leaves for Indianapolis.
