Mike Tomlin Speaks Out About steelers star displays of frustration Outbursts.
Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Monday that George Pickens’ frustration with the offense is a “natural human response” to the team’s struggles, but he wants Pickens to focus on turning those outbursts into something constructive.
“It’s a problem because it’s not a solution-oriented thing,” Tomlin said. “You know we’re frustrated, but we need to handle it in a professional, grown-up way. When we don’t do that, it doesn’t necessarily lead us to a solution.
It’s hard to see Pickens moping as a good thing. While his frustration is understandable in the grand scheme of things, there are times when he looks exasperated even when his teammates are performing well. It’s possible that some of that frustration stems from Pickens not feeling like he’s accomplished anything personally.
As Tomlin has said in the past, he’s not trying to play catch-up with Pickens here. There’s no question that he’d like to see Pickens fire up in his second year, but he doesn’t seem to be doing that right now.
Few would describe Pickens’ moping as constructive. While his dissatisfaction is certainly understandable in a general sense, there have been moments where he looks upset even when the rest of the team is succeeding, suggesting that some of it is rooted in a lack of personal accomplishment.
Tomlin has previously downplayed Pickens’ frustration, and he is not really attacking it here, either. There is no doubt that he would want it to fuel his second-year wide receiver instead of causing him to check out, though.
