Steelers Have Reportedly Made a terrifying Decision.
The Pittsburgh Steelers may have a decision to make regarding Mike Tomlin’s job security in the upcoming off-season.
The Steelers have lost three of their last four games, which would send Tomlin to his first losing season in 17 years as a head coach.
Mike Tomlin, the coach who has never lost a single game in his career, is losing more than expected this season, and after two brutal losses to the reeling Arizona Cardinals and the New England Patriots, the possibility of his firing is growing more and more likely.
According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Tomlin’s contract is set to expire at the end of the 2024 season, but sources inside the organization don’t think he’ll be fired before then. Russini writes: “Mike Tomlin’s contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers is up at the end of next year, but the coach isn’t sweating it.”
Pittsburgh’s owners are known for their patience, and Russini pointed to that as one of the reasons Tomlin is likely to serve out the remainder of his contract. The Steelers have had only three coaches since 1969 (Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher and Tomlin), so Russini doesn’t anticipate Art Rooney II deviating from his family’s track record when it comes to head coaches.
If there was ever a season in which Tomlin could be fired, this would be it – especially if Pittsburgh fails to make the playoffs for the second time in three years since Tom Brady took over.
Pittsburgh’s offense is in its worst form since 2019 (Roethlisberger is out with a back injury and the team has won just eight games) and hasn’t ranked in the top 10 since 2018. The defense is still good, but it’s not as dominant as in recent years.
These last four games will almost certainly determine Tomlin’s fate, but the expectations are for him to stay in Pittsburgh – at least for one more year.
