Aston Villa fans clash with police in front of the stadium

Fans of Legia Warszawa have been seen lighting flares and fighting with police outside Birmingham’s Aston Villa stadium ahead of today’s Europa Conference League tie.

More than 1,000 supporters of the Polish national football team have travelled from all over Europe to attend the game, despite not having tickets.

According to the Express and Star, around 3,000 supporters are believed to have made the trip, despite West Midlands Police reducing the number of tickets available for the match from 1,700 to 1,000 following an intervention by the police.

According to the paper, Legia supporters believe they are being targeted unfairly.

On the other hand, live pictures from Birmingham today showed scenes of chaos outside Villa Park as police arrived with horses and riot shields.

The match started at 8pm with Aston Villa striker Moussa Diaby scoring the opening goal after four minutes.
