Sheffield United legend Emi Martinez’s former team-mate set for new role at Sheffield Wednesday Emi Martinez’s former team-mate Emi Martinez has signed a new contract with Sheffield Wednesday.

It has been reported first by BBC Sheffield that Sal Bibbo is set to be the latest in a long line of new arrivals to join Röhl’s backroom staff. Bibbo will be working alongside Cameron Dawson alongside Devis Vasquez, and will be joining Röhl after a successful coaching career at Reading, Arsenal, and Brighton. Bibbo played as a journeyman for Sheffield United in the mid-1990s before joining the club as a player-coach.

Brambilla, 49, is set to take over from Antonello, who served as goalkeeping coach during Xisco’s brief spell as Wednesday manager. Since Brambilla left with Xisco last month, academy keeper Nicky Weaver has been in charge of the stoppers.

Bibbo was rated highly during his initial full-time stint with Reading, where he made seven league starts towards the end of his career. During his time at Berkshire, he helped develop Premier League goalkeepers including Federici and McCarthy.

Bibbo joined Arsenal in 2019 as part of a reshuffle of the backroom staff. He worked with Petr Cech, Emi Martinez and many others who hold him in high regard.

Martinez credited Bibbo as a key figure in his progress from loan spells at both Wednesday and Rotherham to his World Cup success with Argentina last summer.

On securing the final of those loan moves at the Madejski Stadium in 2019, he said: “I really admire Sal, he is a great coach and a great person, so he was a big influence on me coming here.”

When Arsene Wenger left the club, a lot of people were let go at Arsenal. There was a reason why Arsenal wanted Bibbo to stay at the club. I am delighted to see him still at Arsenal.

Bibba left Arsenal in 2020 to take up a youth goalkeeping coaching role at Brighton, where he joined in summer 2021. During his time at the club, he has worked alongside managers such as Wenger,Unai Emery,Brendan Rodgers and Steve Clarke.

If confirmed, it would be a positive step in Röhl’s rebuilding of his team ahead of the international break. The German coach has said appointing a new keeper coach is a priority going into the international break.
