Mike Tomlin will now have to work on resolving some of the problems that Pittsburgh had this season. His future with the Steelers organization appears to be fairly certain.
Finding a replacement for Matt Canada, who was fired in the middle of the season, will be one of those major challenges.
After Canada was fired, Eddie Faulkner and Mike Sullivan took over, but Tomlin informed reporters on Thursday that he will be searching outside the company for the next offensive coordinator for the Steelers.
“I want us to be dynamic and adaptable,” Tomlin stated. We must, of course, score more points. My goal is to be able to deceive defenders. I want to make the most of every talent we possess. The talent pool and this process have me thrilled.
Even though the Steelers advanced to the postseason and Tomlin continued his 17-year winning streak, the team’s offensive was not among the best in 2023.
During the regular season, they finished 28th in the NFL with 17.8 points per game.
He informed reporters that someone with prior experience in the role will also be given the post.
Tomlin will need to make some decisions regarding the quarterback position in addition to selecting the best offensive coordinator.
Tomlin did note that the Steelers “don’t anoint anyone” and that there would be “competition,” even if it appears he has already decided that Kenny Pickett will return to the starting position in 2024.
Mason Rudolph started near the conclusion of the season and put up strong performances, but Pickett hasn’t exactly swept the starter position.
Regarding Rudolph, Tomlin remarked, “I cannot emphasize how impressive it is to be ready—forget performance man—to be ready to deliver, and he was.” “And that readiness was evident, so we are undoubtedly less skeptical about his abilities because there is proof of it, proof of it in trying situations.”
Tomlin expressed his desire for Rudolph to return for the upcoming season.
Following their loss to the Bills on Monday in the AFC wild-card round, the Steelers had been the subject of rumors regarding Tomlin’s future.
