Ellis Genge has talked out about his incredible comeback from a hamstring injury ahead of England’s forthcoming Six Nations season, drawing comparisons to the superhero Wolverine’s recuperative abilities.
The loosehead prop should be ready for England’s opening Championship match on February 3 in Rome against Italy.
Steve Borthwick, the manager of England, will be greatly encouraged by the news of his recuperation. On Wednesday, he will announce his Six Nations team.
Although Genge won’t be ready for Friday’s Champions Cup match against Connacht, he could play again against Bath in the Premiership on January 27 if England determines he needs more playing time. Genge suffered his injury early in December while on duty with the Bristol Bears.
“I’m doing fine. The hammy has mended, they said. They mentioned something remarkable, akin to Wolverine, the X-Men character, said Genge.
We’ll only work on that this week because they mentioned that there is still some juvenile scar tissue. However, I ought to be in shape.
“The rehabilitation process has been arduous and protracted. Seeing everyone else play is difficult.
“Obviously, as a bigger player, you want to be engaged when your team isn’t playing well, but I’ve been sitting on the sidelines crying my eyes out.”
The news of Genge’s recuperation has been encouraging for Borthwick, who has been struggling in the loosehead position since Mako Vunipola’s retirement from Test rugby, injuries to Joe Marler (arm), and Bevan Rodd (broken toe) that will keep him out of action for the entire Six Nations.
Beno Obano scheduled for summons
Beno Obano of Bath, who has been playing well for his club, is probably going to be included in Borthwick’s 36-man roster when it is revealed on Wednesday morning.
Genge remarked during the Netflix Six Nations documentary debut, “Beno has been amazing.”
Whether you like it or not, it gives you fire. If you claimed that it didn’t motivate you to get back in shape and show the world what you are capable of, you would be lying.
In the meantime, veteran hooker Jamie George is anticipated to be selected as England’s captain for the Championship following Owen Farrell’s withdrawal due to his decision to put his mental health first.
