Roman Wilson has switched to the No. 1 jersey, which has a rich history in Michigan football.
The finalized roster for Michigan football’s 2023 campaign features some significant adjustments in terms of numbers and roles.
Regarding player numbers, Roman Wilson’s departure was the most significant move. The senior wide receiver from Hawaii will now play football for Michigan wearing number one.
The four-star prospect has caught 25 passes for the Wolverines in each of the last two seasons, totaling 376 and 420 receiving yards in 2022 and 2021, respectively. Besides that, he has seven touchdown receptions.
We’ve heard all fall camp long about how Wilson has become Michigan football’s genuine No. 1 wide receiver. He’s currently donning the number one, which has historically belonged to wide receiver greats like Anthony Carter and Braylon Edwards.
Jim Harbaugh’s standards weren’t always that high. This season, Amorion Walker will start at number one on the defensive end for Michigan football, replacing Andrel Anthony, who wore the number last year.
Here are some recent comments made by offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore about Wilson, who is currently the team’s top player and wears the number on offense.
“Roman has had an incredible camp,” Moore remarked. “I’m just very eager to see what he can accomplish and how he will affect the offense this season. He has obviously been hampered by the injuries, but he has been well and prepared to go. Simply ecstatic about him and his advancements.”
In the Fiesta Bowl loss to TCU, Wilson had five receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown. He was dealing with ailments before them, but he scored more than 65 yards in two games before they occurred.
Though that number hasn’t paid off recently, there’s a chance for a breakout season, and with him wearing the No. 1, it feels even more like he and the team believe it will happen.
