Phillies Injury Updates: Phillies top star placed on…..

Covey (Low Back Pain) – 15-day DL

The Phillies placed Covey on the disabled list on Saturday due to low back pain, the team said. Covey has pitched only once since September 19. The team recalled Luis Ortiz from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Covey’s place on the 25-man roster. The right-handed pitcher is expected to eat up some of the Phillies’ innings this weekend.

In addition to Covey’s DL stint, the Phillies recalled OF Weston Wilson from Lehigh Valley and optioned RF Rodolfo Castro to the Spring Training complex.

Destiny Lugardo (Torn Left ACL) – 60-day DL

The Phillies’ first baseman underwent surgery on Thursday morning, March 30, to repair a torn left ACL. Manager Rob Thomson said earlier in the week that Hoskins is expected to make a return to the majors by the end of the season, likely in time for the World Series if the Phils make it to the post-season.

White Sox starter Dylan Covey delivers a pitch during the second inning.

Hoskins has been on the field for batting practice on a daily basis. On Sept. 26, Thompson said that the 25-year-old is taking 75 to 80 swings per day and has hit seven or eight home runs in that day’s batting practice. He also runs the bases.

If Hoskins does return, he will likely serve as a designated hitter or pinch-hitter.

“I’m just trying to make sure he’s swinging freely and without forcing anything, and he looks really good in BP so far,” Thompson said.

Andrew Painter has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right uCL sprain. He is expected to be out for the remainder of the season and is likely to be out until 2025.

On July 25, he underwent Tommy John surgery. The procedure was successful and the recovery time is estimated to be 15-18 months.

Covey placed on 15-day disabled list Saturday with low back pain, retroactive to Sept. 19. The Phillies recalled Luis Ortiz from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Covey’s place on the 25-man roster. The 25-year-old righty is expected to eat up some innings for the Phils this weekend.

Covey’s absence will keep him out of the NLDS until the end of the season.

In addition to Covey’s DL placement, the Phillies recalled outfielder Weston Wilson from Lehigh Valley and recalled Rodolfo Castro from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. (Last updated Sept. 30)

Destiny Lugardo was placed on the 60-day disabled list.

Hoskins undergoes successful left ACL reconstructive surgery on Thursday, March 30.

He is expected to return for the World Series.
