The Detroit Lions are expected to see an increase in their defense after C. J. Gardner-Johnson was granted medical clearance.
After losing two of their last three, the Detroit Lions could see a big improvement in their secondary if they can get defensive back C. J. Gardner-Johnson cleared medically, coach Dan Campbell said Monday. Gardner-Johnson has been out since Week 2 after tearing his pectoral muscle in last week’s overtime win over the Seattle Seahawks. After being placed on the Lions’ injured reserve list, Gardner-Johnson is expected to return to practice as soon as next week.
Coach Campbell called the news “great news” and credited Gardner-Johnson’s speedy recovery to what he referred to as “mutant genes.” The defensive back had already announced his return to social media, where he shared a post about “The Simpsons” sitcom. Campbell said Gardner-Johnson has recovered and will be ready to join the team in a few days.
The Lions, who have allowed 25+ points in five of their last six games – tied for the most in the NFL – are eagerly awaiting Gardner-Johnson’s return.
Gardner-Johnson started both of his games this season, totaling 13 total tackles and 2 passes defended. He joined the Lions following a Super Bowl-winning season with the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2022, he was the NFL’s co-leader with six interceptions.
Campbell said that discussions with Lions GM Brad Holmes will take place in the near future, but the overall message was positive. The priority is to get Gardner-Johnson back to practice as soon as possible, get him back in football shape, and make sure he’s ready to make a big difference on defense.
