SAD DAY: Former NBA and magic superstar player passed away

Brandon Hunter, a former NBA player, has passed away at the age of 42.

Brandon Hunter, a former NBA player who starred at Ohio University and went on to a lengthy overseas career, has passed away. He was 42.

The Orlando Magic and Ohio University confirmed Hunter’s death on social media on Wednesday. “We are so sorry to hear about the passing of former teammate Brandon Hunter, and extend our sincerest sympathies to the Hunter family,” the Magic said.

Ohio University called Hunter a “legend of Ohio basketball,” and said “our thoughts and prayers are with Brandon’s family at this difficult time.”

“Brandon Hunter passed away on Tuesday after a hot yoga session in Orlando,” said Cliett, a family friend. “He was 42 years old.”

Hunter transferred to Ohio Bobcats from 1999-2003. He was named to the 2000 MAC Freshman Team and was named to the 2001-03 MAC First Team. He holds the Bobcats’ single-season free throw record (561), single-season free throws attempted record (923), and single-season rebounds record of 1,103. He is a member of Ohio University’s Hall of Fame induction class of 2022.

Bobcats men’s basketball head coach Jeff Boals released a statement on the passing of Brandon Hunter, one of the best players to ever play for Ohio. “Brandon Hunter is a beloved member of Bobcat Nation,” Boals wrote. “He was a great player at Ohio and went on to a successful professional career. He and his son were inducted into Ohio University’s Hall of Fame last year. Brandon was an ambassador for Ohio and a great teammate. He was a competitor and a family man. His infectious personality touched many people throughout his life and he will be greatly missed. We extend our sincerest condolences to his wife, Mary, and his three children.”

In the 2003 NBA Draft, Hunter was selected by the Boston Celtics in the 56th pick of the second round. He played in 36 games for the Celtics during the 2003-04 season, posting an average of 3.5 rebounds per game. He also played in 31 games with the Orlando Magic during the 2004-05 season, his last in the NBA.
