The Colombian government announced that left-wing rebels had taken the father of Liverpool football player Luis Díaz hostage.

The National Liberation Army (ELN) kidnapped Luis Manuel Díaz and his wide at a petrol station in Barrancas, the country’s government has announced. Hundreds of army personnel were sent to rescue the Liverpool player’s father after police initially claimed that a criminal gang was responsible for the kidnappings. The player broke his silence about the abduction by calling for the release of Luis Manuel “Mane” Diaz, who remains missing after gunmen abducted his parents on Saturday night.

While Luis’ mother, Marulanda, was saved in the same town, it’s believed that Diaz’s father has been taken to a neighboring Venezuela.

The Instagram post encouraged protesters to bring candles as a “light of hope” and called for a march on October 31.

Mane Diaz’s whereabouts are the responsibility of the Colombian military and police; the president of the nation, Gustavo Petro, has declared that “all the public forces” have been mobilized to find him.

While roadblocks are put up, helicopters and drones are searching the nation.

This week, police were conducting searches in the Perija mountain range near the Venezuelan border.

William Salamanca, the director general of Colombian police, was observed attending the operation to “acknowledge our commandos’ courage and dedication in bringing him back safely.”

Police have posted a reward of 200 million pesos, or £40,000, for any information that leads to Mane Diaz’s rescue.

No requests for a ransom have been made.

Diaz has broken his silence over his father's kidnapping

The attorney general of Colombia expressed his concern that the father might have been deported.

“If he ends up crossing the border and he’s in Venezuela, we have to ask President Gustavo Petro… to help us with freeing Luis Diaz’s father,” Francisco Barbosa stated.

The football association of Colombia has also begged the kidnappers to free Diaz’s father.
