According to officials, a freshman football player at Austin Peay State University passed away in a single-car accident close to the Clarksville, Tennessee, campus on Friday night.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department reported in a news release that 18-year-old Jeremiah Collins was driving too fast when he exited Briley Parkway West at Clarksville, causing his pickup truck to roll multiple times before coming to a stop in a grassy area.

No indications of impairment were present, according to the police. Collins was taken to a hospital, where he was subsequently declared deceased.

In a press announcement issued early on Saturday morning, university representatives declared his passing and said the student body was in sorrow.

“The loss of Jeremiah Collins has left us all heartbroken and devastated,” head football coach Scotty Walden wrote in the press statement. “Jeremiah was a remarkable young man who consistently brought an amazing attitude and energy to his work. We offer our condolences and prayers to the Collins family for their untimely loss.

Last April, Collins received his diploma from Oakland High School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
