Steelers starlet undergoes a dangerous surgery.

Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett will have surgery on his ankle on Monday, but sources tell NFL.com that the team isn’t expected to put Pickett on injured reserve.

According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, Pickett’s surgery will be similar to a tightrope that would typically be performed on a high ankle sprained.

“Kenny Pickett is scheduled for surgery on Monday,” Rapoport said on Good Morning Football. “He’ll be out for the rest of the week and could be out for the New England Patriots game on Thursday and possibly longer.”

The Steelers are hoping Pickett will be able to return before the Week 17 finale against the Baltimore Ravens, Rapoport added.

Mike Tomlin said Monday at his weekly news conference Pickett suffered a “high ankle sprain” and underwent surgery this morning to help speed up the recovery process.

Tomlin said Pickett won’t be a game-time decision for Thursday, but there’s no reason to believe it’ll be season-ending.

The Steelers lost Pickett in the second quarter of their Week 13 game against the Arizona Cardinals, after a scramble for a two-yard gain on fourth-and-goal from the Arizona goal line.

Pittsburgh had already lost Pickett to a shin and rib injury earlier in the season, but this is a major blow to the team’s playoff hopes.

Trubisky replaced Pickett on Sunday and is expected to start against New England on Thursday.

They are currently sitting at 7-5 and are the fifth seed in the AFC. However, they are one of four AFC teams that are 7-5, and they are just two teams that are 6-6.
