Lions coach Dan Campbell fears ‘major issue’

Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell predicts a ‘major problem’ that could ruin the team’s chances of reaching the Super Bowl as the season comes to a crashing halt. Quarterback Jared Goff has thrown more interceptions this season than all of 2022

Lions coach Dan Campbell is concerned that Detroit’s ball security problems could cost the team a trip to the Super Bowl. The Lions have dropped their last two games, but still lead the NFC North heading into Week 13.

In a 29-22 Thanksgiving Day loss to Green Bay Packers, Campbell’s team lost three fumbles and gave up 20 points in the first quarter. The Packers’ offense then played catch-up for the rest of the game. Campbell attributed the team’s recent losing streak to “simple mistakes.” He told reporters after the game, “I went back, and after I watched it, I’m actually more encouraged because I think it’s not what it looks like.”

At the most basic level, it’s called the turnover ratio.

In addition to the four turnovers against Green Bay, the Lions also turned the ball over four times against the Bears. Campbel went on to say that on special teams, the Lions had one turnover against Chicago. “We gave up four against Chicago, we gave up three against Green Bay, and we only recovered one. That’s the biggest thing right now.”

Until we get that sorted out, the rest of this is irrelevant and, frankly, not the biggest problem. We need to keep the ball in our hands, and we can do that.

After a hot start to the season, Lions quarterback Jared Goff has cooled off over the past few weeks. He has thrown for 3,075 yards with 18 touchdowns and 8 picks, which is more picks than he has thrown in the entire 2022 season. He gave up three picks against the Bears last week.

Goff and the Lions will have their chance to get back on track on Sunday when they host New Orleans Saints at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
