Tennessee Athletic Director dies at the early hours of the day.

Hamilton died after succumbing to complications from his illness.

Mike Hamilton, the former athletic director of the University of Tennessee men’s athletic department, has passed away at the age of 60, WVLT has confirmed. Hamilton served as the athletic director of the men’s athletic department at the University of Tennessee from 2003 until 2010. He replaced Doug Dickey as the university’s seventh men’s athletic director. During his tenure, the Vol football team hired Lane Kiffin as the head coach in 2008, replacing Phillip Fulmer. Hamilton stepped down as the athletic director in June of 2011, after months of struggling with numerous NCAA issues, including sanctions imposed against the Vol basketball program and former head coach Bruce Pearl. Hamilton was undergoing a procedure at the time of his death, and according to reports, he passed away due to complications resulting from the procedure. The cause of death has not yet been released.

After UT, Hamilton joined Learfield as Executive Vice President, University Partnership Group, bringing with him 30 years of experience in college athletic leadership.
