MOT has signed £37m striker prior to relegation after Champions League brace.

Leeds United were linked with Lois Openda in April, but the Belgian striker has burst onto the European scene after scoring 21 goals in his last season at Lens in France.

RB Leipzig gave Manchester City a run for their money last night, scoring twice in the first 45 minutes to take a 2-0 lead.

But it’s not the first time Leeds have been linked with Openda. While the Whites are still in the hunt for survival in the top-tier, French newspaper Le Journal de France reported earlier this month that Leeds are interested in signing the Belgian striker.

But Openda did end up signing for Leipzig in the summer, for a whopping £37m, despite the club having other top-class strikers in Werner, Sesko, and Poulsen – the latter of whom has also been linked with Leeds in the past.

Leipzig appear to have made a good investment in Openda, who has scored 13 goals in his last 20 games across all competitions, although he has only played 90 minutes twice this season.

After links with Leeds, Openda scored a brace against Manchester City last night. He started well, going one-on-one with Manolo Gabbiadini and finishing. He then did the same for Ruben Diaz, making it two goals early in the second half.

Leeds fans may rue the fact that they were linked with Openda in the first place, despite the striker costing them £37m – a price that might have been too much for them in the summer when they were still in the Championship – but they were interested in him before they went down. Now he is lighting up the biggest stage
