Leeds now have the budget to sign Scottish Premiership star today.
Leeds United have been given the green light to complete the signing of Matt O’Riley from Celtic this afternoon, but Sky Sports commentator Tim Thornton has questioned whether the deal will go through due to another significant factor.
O’Riley has been subject to interest from the West Yorkshire side throughout the summer, with Daniel Farke said to be keen admirer of the midfielder.
Leeds United Transfer News – Matt O’Riley
Leeds United have been busy in the transfer market over the past week, with manager Farke spending big money on new signings Joel Piroe, Djed Spence & Glen Kamara in recent days.
Now, Sky Sports reporter Thornton has revealed that Celtic’s O’Riley, who has previously been described as ‘outstanding’, is at the top of the club’s wanted signings list.
And with just hours remaining in the window, speculation is rife that the Whites could yet try and close a deal for the 22-year-old.
So far, the club’s proposals have not convinced the Scottish side to sell.

What has Tim Thornton saying about Matt O’Riley and Leeds?
When asked about Leeds’ chances of signing O‘Riley, the reliable reporter admitted the Whites had cash in the bank but asked if a deal could be made at this late stage of the process.
“I think it’s more about whether they can get him out of the club, which is the case with a lot of these players they’ve been after, now that they’re not Premier League clubs,” he said.
“So it makes it harder to get players, because he would be leaving Celtic to play in the Championship – is that attractive to a player? Some people will see that as a positive, some won’t, so it just makes it harder.”
Leeds would be able to attract many of these players if they were part of the Premier League.
Leeds have identified a wide range of players where they might be able to get them out of the club.
This is one of the main reasons why it has been such a wide selection of players they have looked at.
They have looked at these players and said, ‘These are the players we can get out of the club, now what are we going to get?’
Identifying players is simple, but getting them to leave the clubs is sometimes more challenging. I don’t think it will be a financial problem. I think Leeds would be able to close the deals if they had to. It’s more about getting the players to leave the clubs.
