Today at Villa Park, Aston Villa are said to be close to agreeing ‘another exciting deal.

There is still time for Aston Villa to make a new signing after Philippe Coutinho’s imminent departure from the club.

Aston Villa’s Philippe Coutinho sale to Al Dubai could open the door to a new ‘exciting deal’ at the club, according to transfer expert Dean Jones’s verdict on the deal.

Here’s Jones’ thoughts:

Unai Emery could add another face to his Villans squad before this evening’s deadline.

Aston Villa are close to completing the signing of Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona, with the deal understood to have been agreed between the two clubs a week ago. Coutinho, 31, has been on the books of Aston Villa since last summer when he joined on a season-long loan deal for £17 million, but has struggled to find his best form under new manager Unai Emery following the departure of Steven Gerrard.

Villa have already welcomed four senior players to the club in the summer transfer window, with the arrival of Youri Tielemenans and Pau Torres, as well as the loan signing of Miccolo Zaniolo from Atletico Madrid. Today, the West Midlands giants are set to confirm the loan signing of Barcelona centre-back Clemens Lenglet.

What has Jones had to say about Aston Villa and Philippe Coutinho?

Jones has said that the sale of Philippe Coutinho could allow Aston Villa to make an additional signing, with the attacking midfielder receiving some relief from the situation.

According to a transfer insider, Villa informed Coutinho that they would not be relying on him this season, and that he would have to look for a new challenge.

The source added that Coutinho had been targeted by Saudi Arabia due to his profile, and they explored various options, but ultimately the move to Qatar was the preferred option.

“It should give him some relief,” the source said. “More than that, it opens up a world of possibilities for Villa on deadline day, and it gives them some breathing room to consider one of the exciting deals that fans have been waiting for.”

What else is Aston Villa up to today?

With Philippe Coutinho’s wages no longer required, Aston Villa could announce a new signing in the early hours of the morning.

“I think we could close the deal in the next few hours,” said Jones. “I think we could make an attack-minded signing at Villa Park.”

The Villans have been linked with a move for Fati from Barcelona and Cherki from Lyon in the past, but it didn’t work out.

90min have reported that Arsenal have turned down Chelsea’s bid to land Emile Smith Rowe, while Newcastle United and Aston Villa are still interested in the talented full-back.

Emery will want to have a team that can compete in both the Premier League and the Europa Conference League when the transfer window shuts this afternoon.
