Barry Sanders Slams Tom Brady’s NFL Comments: Lions Legend Pokes Fun at 7-Time NFL Champion

Barry Sanders, a Detroit Lions legend and Hall of Famer, has a different opinion than Tom Brady when it comes to the state of the NFL. Sanders was recently interviewed by Robert Griffin III and asked about Brady’s comments that “there is a lot of mediocre in the NFL right now.” Sanders, who was honored with a statue earlier this season, said that his opinion of the current state of the NFL is based largely on the Lions’ current success. Detroit is currently 8-3, including a win over the Packers on Thursday, and currently leads the NFC North by a wide margin. Sanders said that while Brady may be referring to the teams he played for, “the team I played for was anything but mediocre.” Sanders added that he still sees a great product, and still sees great teams. “It’s a very popular game, a very popular game,” Sanders said. “I would listen to what he said, but I think it’s the greatest product we have ever seen, the greatest thing we have ever seen.”

As Sanders pointed out, Brady’s former teams haven’t been as successful as the Lions this season. The Buccaneers have gone 4-6 since a three-game winning streak, while the Patriots have gone 2-8 with the league’s 31st-scoring offense.

“I don’t think the coaching has been as great as it could be,” Brady said on “The Stephen A’ Smith Show” on Monday. “I think the young players haven’t developed as well as they could have. I think the rules have made it easier for bad habits to creep into the game, and I think the product is less than it used to be.”

Although Sanders shares some of Brady’s concerns, the former league MVP (and current Jets quarterback has a different take. Rodgers says it’s “almost impossible” for defense to play in today’s game.

The softening of society has certainly played a role in this, Rodgers said on the Pat McAfee Show. “Hockey doesn’t have an enforcer anymore because we don’t need the fighting in hockey. It’s too violent.”

“I think people want to see football become more of a collision sport,” Rodgers said. “Not to the point where guys are getting hurt on the field, but to the point where people are enjoying the big hits. And there are some players out there who are big hitters and are pushing the boundaries of what’s a legitimate hit and what’s not.”
