Good News: UConn Dan Hurley as finally agreed to sign $385 Millions contract for 4 years as LA Lakers head coach…
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski dropped an early-morning W0j Bomb when he reported that the Lakers are preparing a huge offer to Dan Hurley, the head coach of the UConn men’s basketball team, to be their next head coach. Hurley leaving UConn straight off of its second consecutive national championship would be a massive decision.
But his impressive coaching job there has set him up nicely to receive a major payday from the Lakers and the chance to prove himself at the NBA level.
The news of the Lakers’ immense interest in Hurley now calls into question what happens — or happened — with JJ Redick.
The 15-year NBA veteran and current broadcaster/podcaster has been mentioned repeatedly as a target for LA, one that the franchise was reportedly “zeroing in” on before Redick blasted that rumor himself.
With James and Redick’s relationship so close after starting a podcast together (and playing against each other in the NBA for over a decade), how does this news of Hurley affect where the Lakers go forward with their superstar?
A lot of reactions to the Hurley news suggested that it was a response to the likelihood that James, who can enter unrestricted free agency this offseason, will leave Los Angeles.
Hurley becoming the Lakers’ head coach may actually implore James to stay with the Lakers. Wojnarowski wrote in his report that having Hurley implement his systems in LA and having his developmental talents for James’ son, Bronny, makes for an intriguing situation.
James still hopes to play with his son and, while Hurley’s player development would obviously extend to others on the team, he would seemingly be very happy to have such a great coach help his son improve.
