Tom Werner Proud of Success, but Hungry for More - The Liverpool Offside

FSG, the owners of Liverpool, announce “Paramount” as Tom Werner’s son speaks out.

In less than two months, Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) will launch a new business.

The Reds have been owned by John Henry and Co. since 2010, and in that time, they have won seven major championships, including the Premier League in 2019 and the Champions League in 2019. They will also be hoping that, following an encouraging start to the season, Jurgen Klopp’s team can add more trophies to the trophy cabinet at Anfield.

The Boston Red Sox, a Major League Baseball team, have also seen success with FSG. Over their 21-year tenure, they have owned the iconic outfit and produced four World Series titles.

The Pittsburgh Penguins, a National Hockey League team that was acquired for an estimated $900 million in December 2021, will have comparable goals. And FSG will also be hoping for success for their golf team in a new league. Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, two golfing icons, will lead the Technology Golf League, which will launch on January 9, 2024. It will feature live action and cutting-edge technology, with teams of PGA Tour players like Woods, McIlroy, John Rahm, and Tommy Fleetwood of Southport.

One of the six Boston-based franchises that FSG has acquired has been named Boston Common Golf. The name was selected because it “reinforces the vision of accessibility to the game and pays homage to the city’s iconic public space.”

Common Golf’s governor is Teddy Werner, son of FSG chairman Tom and a Liverpool supporter. Speaking to the Boston Globe, he explained the choice of name, saying, “We felt it was absolutely paramount that there was an established deep connection through the name and identity system to Boston, and with the venue not in the market, establishing this connection to Boston was even more critical.”

This is the reason the team’s name derives from the nation’s first public park and the main green area in the center of the city. The definition of “common” also conveniently played into TGL’s quest to weaken the strong associations golf still has with exclusivity and elitism, as FSG was adamant that the team name not be gimmicky, not include a reference to Fenway, and not include the word “club” (used by two other TGL franchises, the Los Angeles Golf Club and Atlanta Drive GC).

Tom Werner Emerges to Create Race for Commissioner - The New York Times

“We truly want to embrace the idea that we’re attempting to ‘commonize’ golf. Our goal is to create golf that appeals to all people.

Having these two options was great because one of them was undoubtedly more irreverent—in the not-take-yourself-so-literally sense. The alternative system centered around a bird was more conventional and timeless. On both sides, there were individuals.

However, as we discussed it, we came to the conclusion that FSG plays a role in our interest in it because it pushes the boundaries and is a little bit unique. The goal of TGL is to create a unique version of the game of golf. This mark was intended to be slightly more enigmatic and slightly more visible. People started to wonder, “Why the frog?” Additionally, we thought that a system centered around a frog would look a little more stylish than one around a bird.
