Miami Hurricanes QB Tyler Van Dyke shares his thoughts about the team at ACC Media Day with fall drills around the corner.
After Tyler Van Dyke had arguably the worst game of his college career in a 20-6 loss to N.C. State, Miami Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal said Monday that the passing game had clearly “regressed” from earlier in the season.
“We take it all into account,” Cristobal said during his weekly interview on WQAM’s The Joe Rose Show. “Obviously, he’s been banged up. But the bottom line is we’ve regressed in the passing game. It was our strength early in the year. It hasn’t been good. I don’t ever put that on one particular player or thing. We’ve got to take complete ownership of it. But we’ve regressed. We were really really good at it, and certainly, it’s on us to get it right, it’s on us to get it better.
“It’s been frustrating for everybody, but certainly, you just can’t allow any chinks in your armor. you’ve got to work at it together and move forward, and that’s what we’re working on.”
When asked how he was going to handle the position this week, Cristobal said the staff is “always assessing everything” but said he did not want to discuss personnel decisions publicly.
“It’s a tough position to be in. It’s a quarterback. You’re banged up,” Cristobal said. “I know they’re frustrated. We’re all frustrated, as a team. Our approach always is to find a way to make it work. And we’re always assessing everything. …
“We turn over every rock. I don’t think anyone can fathom the amount of time we invest to get everything right, how we’re always considering every way possible to get every position better.
That’s where we’re at right now. Obviously, we don’t discuss the intricacies of all personnel stuff publicly, especially when we’re still meeting, putting the stuff together as an organization.”
When asked at his press conference Monday afternoon whether that assessment meant the best player in this week’s practices would start or whether it would be business as usual for the quarterbacks, Cristobal declined to say whether they would bench Van Dyke.
“I will respectfully say this: Just from a game-planning standpoint and a team dynamic standpoint, I wouldn’t use this forum to discuss a personnel move, especially at that position, because it affects so many things,” Cristobal said
