Manchester United were clearly focused on finding a centre-forward in the summer transfer window.

After an extensive search, they secured the services of Rasmus Hojlund and signed him under Atalanta’s Erik ten Hag for £72 million.
However, the end result could have been very different if the former Serie A star decided to move to another club.

Athletics (join required) have revealed that Man United’s Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur have expressed an interest in signing the Danish ace.

The Lilywhites have been preparing for the departure of Harry Kane during the summer transfer window, with Hojlund being considered a possible replacement for the England captain.
Later, Kane left London and moved to Bayern Munich for a whopping £100 million. By then, however, Hojlund had already decided to move to Manchester and was committed to the ranks of the Red Devils. The Old Trafford outfit have reached an agreement with the 20-year-old. He was appointed to lead United’s attack in Ten Hag’s second season as the club’s manager. It’s worth noting that despite Tottenham’s inquiry into the youngster, Hojlund wanted to join Man United from the start and Spurs would likely have found his price tag quite steep. Ange Postecoglou’s side finally decided to sign Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest in a £47m deal on deadline day, opting not to bring in other high-priced strikers.

Johnson had an impressive scoring record. He scored 13 goals in one season for Lincoln, followed by 19 goals in his debut season as a first-team player for Forest and then 10 goals in his final season.
Those numbers are impressive because he didn’t play primarily as a forward; instead, he often played in wider positions.

It remains to be seen whether the Lilywhites will regret losing Hojlund even though Richarlison is their main striker following his new deal.
They have done well with their players in the Premier League this season. Losing a player like Kane is definitely hard to swallow and it will be difficult to find someone who can replace him as a goalscorer.
