It’s led to speculation that Higgins, Cincinnati’s No. 2 receiver, could be moved this offseason. The Bengals have needs to address on both sides of the ball, including offensive tackle and the defensive line. With the club already planning to extend Ja’Marr Chase’s contract next year, it makes some sense to trade Higgins for draft capital and then use it on a bigger need.

According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, executives around the league believe if the Bengals put Higgins on the trade block there will be teams offering an early second-round pick or potential a first-round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.

This is considered to be one of the deepest and most talented receiver classes in years, which could provide even more incentive for Cincinnati. The Bengals could use their original first-round pick on a defensive tackle, the pick acquired from trading Higgins on an offensive tackle and then find a receiver replacement in Round 2.

However, that decision might strike a nerve with Burrow. The Pro Bowl quarterback loves having the Higgins-Chase receiver duo and it does give Cincinnati and advantage when matched up against NFL defenses. If the Bengals didn’t hit on their Higgins replacement, it could leave them with a void that lasts for years.

On the other hand, a No. 2 receiver even of Higgins’ caliber could be seen as less valuable than a high-end right tackle or a difference-maker on the defensive interior.

While head coach Zac Taylor’s comments on Monday suggest Higgins will return next season, the Bengals’ front office will likely keep its options open in case another team offers a first-round pick.
