Elland Road might once again be considered as a potential host site for Euro 2028 for Leeds United, insiders have informed Football Insider.
The 38,000-capacity stadium was initially snubbed as part of the 10-stadium shortlist for the tournament set to be hosted by England, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
However, there are fears that the construction project for Casement Park in Northern Ireland will not be completed in time.
Development is yet to start on the 34,500-seat stadium with concerns growing over the potential cost.
It was initially estimated to cost £73million but that figure has soared to £110million and no decision has been made in regards to how funding will be acquired.
Sources say that Elland Road will be among a list of venues considered as a replacement if Casement Park drops out.
Elland Road could be refurbished and expanded before the start of the tournament in 2028, strengthening its chances of being selected.
New Leeds owners – 49ers Enterprises – have publicly spoken about plans to expand the stadium since taking over the club in the summer.
Football Insider revealed in November that Leeds have accelerated plans to expand Elland Road after securing external investment.
If the Yorkshire club secures promotion back to the Premier League, construction could begin as early as next season.
