Cristian Romero, one of the top defenders in the world, is a favorite of both Lionel Messi of Inter Miami and Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou.

Cristian Romero, a star for Tottenham, has been dubbed “the best defender in the world” by Lionel Messi, his Argentine teammate and captain who won the World Cup. Romero joined Spurs in August 2022 for $53.6 million, and he has had a rocky start to life in north London.

The 25-year-old has made 68 appearances for Spurs, including seven last season in the Champions League. The defender has been dismissed three times, but has developed a reputation as a hard and unyielding player. However, his performance throughout the 2023–24 season is mimicking the form he shown while representing his nation.

Romero has scored twice in four Premier League games for Tottenham under new boss Postecoglou, who has Tottenham second in the early standings, only behind defending champions Manchester City. Romero, a World Cup and Copa America champion, was referred to as “the best defender in the world” by Argentina captain and colleague Messi during the 1-0 victory over Ecuador last week.

The 36-year-old Inter Miami star Messi claimed that the best defender in the world at the moment is him. Man of the match tonight, amazing performance.

Postecoglou, the manager of Tottenham, concurs with the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s evaluation of the defense. Postecoglou told the British radio station talkSPORT, “I wouldn’t argue with Messi.” “I’ll tell you what, playing against Romero is not something I would like.

The majority of the boys dislike practicing with him. He’s a true competitor, which I adore about him. Romero gives you exactly what you see, whether it’s during practice or a match.

Given that the storied forward is now competing for Inter Miami in the MLS, Messi won’t have to face off against his countryman anytime soon. Following the expiration of his contract at Paris Saint-Germain, he joined on a free transfer in the summer. Romero would have had little opportunity of playing this season even if Messi had remained in Europe, as Spurs were eliminated from all three of Uefa’s European Club championships.

Messi is back playing with a smile on his face and seems happy in Miami. His performance on the field demonstrates this; in 11 games for Miami, the attacker scored 11 goals and provided five assists. With his League Cup triumph, he also contributed to the MLS team winning its first title. Later this month, when they take on Houston Dynamo in the US Open Cup Final, Inter Miami will have another opportunity to win a trophy.

Miami has been undefeated since Messi’s debut and is back in action on Saturday when they take on Atlanta United in an attempt to make the MLS playoffs.
