Nat Phillips is not in the Celtic team that will face Rangers this afternoon, according to Brendan Rodgers, who also disclosed the reason why.

The 26-year-old center back joined the Hoops this week on a season-long, last-minute loan from Liverpool in the hopes that he would be fit to play against their Glasgow rivals today. However, Phillips was not listed in the matchday squad when the team lineups were released, which led several fans to wonder why he had arrived.

However, manager Rodgers has now stated that after consulting with the Liverpool medical staff, he hopes to have the Englishman healthy and available after the forthcoming international break.

Nat had that in mind from the moment he came; this was the play he couldn’t make. “We had spoken with the Liverpool medical staff and we had to take care of him,” Rodgers told Sky Sports.

But ideally after the international break, he’ll be prepared.
