It’s Monday Musings: It’s Time for a Big Chang Time for a Big Change

Which means it’s time to get out the paintball guns, put the goggles on, and start spraying everyone with the little dots of orange and white I’ve been rolling around in my head.

Well, that went about as well as expected. I thought UT might have made it a closer game by the third quarter, but then Jaylen Wright went 75 yards on the game’s very first play. Georgia is simply too good everywhere, and Tennessee still has a long road ahead of them in terms of roster size.

I don’t think you need to re-watch that game.

I’ll add my two cents worth to my colleague Terry’s this morning’s, and I’ll be one of them.

I will be one of them, and I will be one of two.

I am going to be one of the two, and I am going to be my two cents worth.

For me, the most important thing is getting in-game repetitions. Just getting extended reps in a live game situation, and being able to build up the timing and the cohesion with the skill position players, and the linemen, is invaluable.

If they want to give Joe a chance to get a few early drives going and a score and send him off on Senior Day, that’s fine with me. But with eyes firmly set on 2024, the best way to get ready for that is to start working on the engine that will power that truck.

This isn’t about loyalty, and it won’t hurt recruiting either. Tennessee gave Joe a fair chance, but he didn’t show up when they needed him in the biggest games of the season, except for the first quarter against Alabama. This is about what’s best for the Vols right now, and that means turning your attention to the future on Saturday.

A lot of bowl projections have the Vols playing a school out of the Tar Heel State, and most of those projections have UNC. It would be a great road game and matchup for the Vols. I love Jacksonville, and I think it would be a great opportunity for the Vols to take on one of the three top picks in next year’s NFL Draft (Drake Maye).

And it wouldn’t be the only Florida bowl the Vols could play in. According to 247 Sports, three bowl representatives from Florida were at Saturday’s Georgia game. A bowl in Florida could be a nice consolation, considering how things have played out over the past couple of weeks.

The Maui Invitational tips today, and the Vols have a chance to win the most prestigious pre-season tournament that’s as good as it’s ever been. Five of the top six teams in the AP Poll are in the tournament. The Vols’ path to a championship could include victories over Syracuse, Purdue, Gonzaga, Kansas, and UCLA. It’s a daunting schedule, and whoever wins this tournament will have the largest nonconference advantage when Selection Sunday arrives. Let’s see who it is starting today.
