The Los Angeles Lakers have officially announced the signing of former North Carolina Tar Heels forward Drake Powell to a two-way contract. The move, which was widely anticipated after Powell’s strong performance in recent workouts and the NBA Draft Combine, provides the Lakers with an intriguing young prospect to develop.

Powell, a 6’6″ forward known for his athleticism, defensive potential, and improving offensive game, spent one season at North Carolina. While his statistics at UNC weren’t eye-popping (averaging 3.8 points and 2.3 rebounds per game), he showcased flashes of his potential, particularly on the defensive end and as a slasher. His draft stock rose significantly after demonstrating his physical tools and basketball IQ during the pre-draft process.

A two-way contract allows Powell to split his time between the Lakers’ active roster and their G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers. This provides him with valuable development opportunities, playing time, and coaching while remaining connected to the NBA team.

Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka expressed optimism about the signing, stating, “Drake is a player we’ve been tracking closely. His athleticism and defensive instincts are impressive, and we believe he has significant upside. A two-way contract is the ideal situation for him to grow and contribute to our organization.”

Powell’s addition gives the Lakers another young player to mold alongside their established core. His versatility could be a valuable asset, and the two-way contract offers a low-risk, high-reward proposition for the team.

Fans will likely get their first look at Powell in a Lakers uniform during the upcoming NBA Summer League. His performance there will be a key indicator of his readiness to contribute at the professional level and how quickly he can make the transition from college to the pros.

The signing continues the Lakers’ strategy of adding promising young talent to their roster, aiming to build for the future while remaining competitive in the present. Powell’s development will be a storyline to watch as the Lakers prepare for the upcoming season.
