Sean Manaea Reveals Devastating Reasons Behind His Decision to Join the New York Mets
In an emotional press conference, left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea revealed the personal and professional struggles that led to his decision to sign with the New York Mets, turning down multiple offers from other teams in favor of a two-year, $20 million deal with the Mets.
“I never thought I’d find myself in this position,” Manaea began, his voice wavering. “But there were reasons beyond baseball that guided me here. There were things I had to work through. Things that you wouldn’t expect from a guy who’s been in the big leagues for a while.”
The 32-year-old veteran admitted that he had been battling mental health challenges and a lack of motivation over the past few seasons. “There were times I felt like I lost my purpose on the mound,” he shared. “I couldn’t find the joy in the game I once loved. It wasn’t just about pitching anymore. It was about trying to survive.”
Manaea went on to explain that after struggling with inconsistent performances and an unfulfilling tenure with the San Diego Padres, he needed a change of scenery. “The Mets’ organization reached out at the right time. It wasn’t just about the money, though it was a generous offer. They offered me something more important—a chance to rediscover who I am, both as a player and a person.”
He also revealed that the Mets’ front office, led by General Manager Billy Eppler, offered unparalleled emotional support, creating an environment that helped him regain his confidence. “They didn’t just sign me for what I could do on the field; they signed me because they believed in me as a person,” Manaea said.
The lefty ended the conference with optimism about the future. “This is my chance to rebuild. I’m here to find my joy in the game again—and hopefully, help this team win.”
