Dallas Cowboys: Mazi Smith Gets Poor Midseason Grade from NFL Analyst

Dallas Cowboys: Mazi Smith
The Cowboys used their first-round draft pick on defensive end Mazi Smith in an effort to bolster the defensive line. Smith’s NFL career has not started off to a great note. As of mid-season, one NFL analyst gave Smith a C grade.

Mazi Smith Receives a Bad Midseason Grade from Bleacher Report
The Dallas Cowboys’ first-round pick, Mazi Smith, has received a bad midseason grade from Bleacher Report’s Ryan Fowler. It’s safe to say he hasn’t impressed. He gave Smith a “D,” and looking at the stats, it’s easy to understand why.
He’s only gotten a handful of opportunities, and he’s only had one pressure in 64 rush attempts. That’s not a great way to earn more playing time.
Smith is an athletic freak, but so far it hasn’t paid off on the field.

The Early Years of Smith’s Career
Every first-round draft pick has the potential to be a star right away. However, this is not always the case. Some players require more time to settle into the NFL and find their footing. The coaching staff has made it clear that they are very pleased with the progress Smith has made this season. If his performance in practice continues to improve, it will likely translate into more playing time during the regular season. This season may not be Smith’s year, and it may take him another year or two to become a star in the league.

In my opinion, Mazi Smith relied too much on physicality in college and not enough on technique. That’s not the way it works in the NFL. He needs to be groomed and if he’s groomed correctly, the Cowboys could have a star player on their hands.
