Hamilton equalled Schumacher’s record of 68 career pole positions when he produced the fastest time during qualifying for the 2017 Belgian Grand Prix.

The Brit went on to add four more taking him to 72, clear of the legendary German, who still tops the all-time race wins charts with 91, 29 ahead of Hamilton.

Schumacher retired in 2012 but a year later suffered a traumatic brain injury during a skiing accident.

The seven-time F1 world champion spent a year in a coma from which he has now awoken and is in private rehabilitation at home.

Little is known about his current condition but Hamilton sent a message of support to the 48-year-old as he reminisced about his season.

“Michael, equalling your pole position record in Belgium this year meant so much to me and was a true honour,” Hamilton wrote.

“Praying for you and your family all the time #KeepFightingMichael #Legend @schumacher”

Hamilton’s fourth world title has seen him nominated for BBC Sports Personality of the Year, an award he won for the first time back in 2014.

He also finished second twice, in 2007 and 2008, but is expected to repeat that feat despite his 2017 successes.

World heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is an overwhelming favourite with the bookies to lift his first such title with Hamilton set to miss out in the public vote.

But even if the British driver does upset the odds, he is not expected to attend the ceremony. The BBC are understood to have already been warned that he will not travel to Liverpool for the occasion, with a number of other nominees also set to snub the awards.

Chris Froome will likely remain in training camp in Mallorca while Mo Farah will do the same in the US and BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year Roger Federer will speak via a pre-recorded video message.
