Back in his hometown of Jacksonville, former Patriots quarterback Mac Jones served as the Jaguars’ third quarterback in their preseason opener, playing the entire second half of a 26-13 win over the Chiefs on Saturday at EverBank Stadium.

Jones, who won a high school state championship at Jacksonville’s Bolles School, finished 9-of-11 passing for 98 yards, leading the Jaguars to field goals on two of his three possessions. The 2021 Patriots first-round pick played behind starter Trevor Lawrence (3 of 4, 42 yards, TD) and CJ Beathard (7 of 14, 126 yards, TD).

Jones’s first possession, which opened the second half, began with a pair of runs before he hit fourth-year tight end Josiah Deguara on a play-action screen for 7 yards. After a short run, Jones took an 11-yard sack from Chiefs linebacker Cole Christiansen, who came unblocked up the middle. Jones’s second possession featured three completions of 10-plus yards and was capped by a 47-yard field goal from Cam Little. Jones hit third-year receiver Austin Trammell for 22 yards over the middle, then connected with second-year receiver Seth Williams for 15 yards on a roll-out off play-action. Later, facing third and 16 following a penalty, Jones found Trammel on an out route for 11 yards to improve Little’s chances.

Jones opened his third possession — a 15-play, 6:55-minute drive — with an incompletion over the middle that hit his intended receiver in the hands. After connecting with rookie Brevin Easton for 5 yards, Jones dropped a ball over the shoulder of Deguara into a small window for a 28-yard completion. Jones did find an open Joshua Cephus on another roll-out, but the throw was low and wide and led Cephus out of bounds for just a 3-yard gain.

Jones’s only shot at the end zone was a third-down fade from the 13-yard line to Deguara, who was open, but Jones overthrew him. Little finished the drive with a 31-yard field goal.
