Ladd McConkey made NFL history on Monday. The wideout signed a record four-year, $180 million contract with the Los Angeles Chargers, to become the highest-paid rookie in the league.
As per Spotrac, McConkey will receive $11.089 million as a signing bonus. His contract equates to a $6.5 million annual average salary.
McConkey’s deal surpassed the four-year, $9.465 million rookie contract the Detroit Lions gave tight end Sam LaPorta last year. Coincidently, LaPorta was also picked No. 34 pick in the 2023 NFL draft.
McConkey has garnered rave reviews at the team’s minicamp and reports suggest the Los Angeles outfit was quite happy to offer the rookie the blockbuster deal.Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz spoke via the team’s official website about how they scouted McConkey and why Los Angeles traded up for the player.
Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert also waxed lyrical on McConkey and said he is building quite a rapport with the wideout.
In total, McConkey racked up 1,687 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns on 119 receptions. He also rushed for 216 yards and four touchdowns.
McConkey earned a Second-Team All-SEC selection in 2022 and won the Wuerffel Trophy in 2023. He was also part of the Bulldogs team that won the national championship twice in 2022 and 2023.
