Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love is optimistic that he will receive a contract extension this summer.
When asked if he thought contract talks would pick up when Packers’ minicamp ends on June 13, Love said, “Yeah, I think they should” (h/t ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.)
Love was then asked if he was optimistic a deal could get done before the start of training camp in July. The quarterback answered, “Yes.”
Love is currently set to play the 2024 season on a $10.5 million salary before hitting unrestricted free agency in 2025.
The former backup to Aaron Rodgers made his debut as a starter last season, during which he threw 32 touchdowns to lead Green Bay back to the playoffs.
Love’s $12.8 million cap hit for the 2024 season ranks 17th among NFL quarterbacks, per Over the Cap, while his touchdown total ranked fourth among signal callers last season.
That disparity means Love is now due for a raise. Spotrac projects his market value at a four-year deal worth $192 million.
Spotrac’s Michael Ginnitti predicted that Love’s next contract will offer the quarterback $87.5 million guaranteed at signing, with $150 million in practical guarantees over the length of the contract.
The Packers are facing the extension question after delaying a long-term decision on Love with a one-year extension last May. That deal gave Love a raise over his fifth-year option and offered Green Bay flexibility if the 2020 first-rounder did not pan out as a starter.
His success in leading the Packers to a Wild Card upset over the Dallas Cowboys answered questions about his ability to succeed as Rodgers’ successor, and Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said in March that the team had already begun “preliminary discussions” about Love’s extension.
